THE PHILANTHROPY OF POETRY

They ask, “Is there any money in poetry?”

The poet’s response will likely be,

“No, our thoughts are our philanthropy

And we expose them to you for free.

Using rhyming words and phrases as our tools

To convey our ideas to all wisemen and fools.

But this you should know well

As experience allows me to tell

As an aspiring poet, my payoff is in a currency instead

Of money, the pleasure I get when my poems are read.

Hopeful that my expressions, thoughts, and humour will light a light,

Encouraging readers to transcend their shadows to a new twilight.”
